Quick Drying Rain

I’ve just been for a little amble around the garden, only to find the ground beneath my feet rock hard, the borders looking as if they’ve been far too well drained, and the lawn looking quite parched and scorched.

Bearing in mind that our subsoil is heavy clay and, in the past we’ve had to recover our previous ponds after the water table had lifted both a plastic shell type and a heavy duty liner, to almost be able to observe the hourly evaporation from our current (more substantial) pond is quite startling! For the borders to appear well drained is even more of a surprise and, almost as a final insult, a wound has opened up in the lawn where I had managed to (almost invisibly) re-lay the power cable for the pond pump earlier in the year.

So last nights rainfall, and this morning’s brief promise of more, has come to naught!
